Jura horse show 100 years old

This year marked the 100th anniversary of the annual horse show [Marché-Concours national de chevaux] in the town of Saignelégier, canton Jura. Journalist Tina Hirschbuehl calls it an agricultural trade show, sporting event and festival rolled into one, and one of the most important horse breeding events in Switzerland. At the centennial, 800 horses were available for viewing. Gérard Queloz, secretary general of the organising committee, speaks of the 15,000-attendee-strong show's economical significance for the town and the efforts, such as inviting guests of honour, that have been made over the years to attract more and more people. Hirschbuehl says the horses, which originate from the Franche-Montagne region of Jura, are considered unique and account for 55 per cent of Swiss horses.
