In many parts of Switzerland, Santa Claus, or Samichlaus as he's known in Swiss-German, makes his visits on and around December 6. This day is the assumed date of the death of Santa's medieval ancestor, St Nikolaus. The Samichlaus tradition combines regional folklore with religious belief, creating a character who comes to reward children with nuts and chocolates as well as imply punishment with a switch. Hans Ernst Weber discusses his day's agenda as Samichlaus, on which he and his sidekick Schmutzli will visit four kindergartens plus two or three families. The curriculum at a training course, organised by the Swiss Samichlaus Association [Schweizer Chlausenverzeichnis] in Vals, canton Graubünden, is described.
